Rogues’ Gallery

The NYPD Rogues’ Gallery in 1909. Photographer unknown. Photo held at the Library of Congress.

To celebrate the return of the County Championship after its now traditional summer break, here’s the new page I’ve been going on about for almost a month.

I think I should point out that the title of this page is not mine but of a contributor who will remain nameless. I was thinking of calling it Team Photo but went rogue.

Please read all the text here before commenting so we can have a bit of fun.

Below are photos of people when they were kids, up to 18 years old, people who post, or have posted, comments on here from time to time. There may be additions later from people who didn’t get in touch quite in time and I’ll add them as and when they arrive. Some people sent more than one photo and they’re all here. There may also be a special guest appearance.

This all stems from an idea I had during an exchange about a photograph of Olivia Newton-John, Helen Reddy, Minnie Riperton and Linda Ronstadt playing tennis in the early 70s, and Billy said “They look so young”, I replied “I looked young once” and Thamessider replied to me, saying “Just the once?”.

The photos are in a randomish order, without names, and only I know who everyone is. Please don’t admit to being the owner of your own photograph or tell the story behind it for a while, so people can have a few guesses and so on, until I say GO! This may be a couple of days, maybe a week as some people aren’t able to log in every day because of w**k and everything – we’ll see how it goes.

Many many thanks to everyone who sent a photo, and I am very aware (because they told me) there are others who aren’t able to send photos for a very wide variety of reasons.

If anyone wants their photo taking down they only have to tell me. No questions asked.

Here we go. I hope it all comes out all right as I’ve never done most of this formatting stuff before:

Here, it’s the one on the left.

Here, it’s also the one on the left.

Here, it’s the one on the right.

This time, it’s the one on the left.

Once more, it’s the one on the right.

I’ve put these two lovely photos together as it’s obviously the same person, and… it’s the one on the right.

  1. Secret talks between British Museum and Greece to return Parthenon Marbles in ‘advance stages’
If a deal is finalised, the contested sculptures are expected to be returned to Greece in early 2023, and will be displayed at the Acropolis Museum in Athens

    https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2022/12/05/after-spending-200-years-in-the-british-museum-the-elgin-marbles-may-be-about-to-return-to-greece

Readers might be interested to know there will be a general election here in Greece in spring next year.

    1. My partner said that she had visited the BM earlier in the summer. It was a very hot day, so a far door in the gallery where the marbles are displayed was open. Not exactly world-leading climate and environmental controls.

  2. This is an advert in Spain for JB whisky. The text 20 seconds before the end means “Magic isn’t only in Christmas. It’s in all of us.”

Don’t bother about the text in the tweet, just watch the video.

  3. Now I know Marnus has almost deity status amongst certain Glamorgan tragics and I don’t wish to burst that bubble but increasingly he’s being seen as an ‘Ugly Australian’ here and it has to do with his constant dissent of umpire’s decisions. This is a link to an article in the SMH where he is trying to justify(to a certain degree) his upsets at being given out.
I just wanted to grab him and give him a shake and tell him to wake up to himself.

    * Quite some win in Pakistan. Naturally I was supporting the home side and I really thought they were going to do it but history says it’s a rare thing ever since the Don’s side did in that tour and it is indeed.

      1. The photograph below shows the old cinema at 926 E. McLemore Avenue in Memphis which became the Stax studio in 1960. The film showing, One Last Fling, was released in 1949 so it’s from eleven years before.

The building was demolished in 1989 after falling into disrepair (Stax’ creditors eventually sold it to a church for $10 in 1981) and an exact replica was built about ten years later by the foundation set up to celebrate Stax and revitalise the neighbourhood which is now known as Soulsville, which is the title of one of the songs on the soundtrack to Shaft.

The new building houses the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

  4. Also, soz to all CC1 batters, but Tom Bailey’s signed on for longer at Lancs. So has Luke Wells and Future England’s George Bell.

  5. At least for those of us in Austria, the test match is on Pakistan Cricket’s youtube channel, and I have the day off because it was a holiday yesterday. 🙂

  6. I realise that not everyone here will have been following the corrupt dealing of Michelle Mone and her husband in the unfolding PPE scandal, but there was a lovely letter in Saturday’s Guardian which made me laugh:

Why is the last letter of Lady Money’s surname always omitted?

    1. I’ve listened to/watched the first half, with Dobell and Kamlesh Patel.

The Yorkshire Post comes in for a major (and justified) battering, TMN get a very effective telling off, and Colin Graves gets quietly slaughtered. And optimism for the new leadership of the ECB, which I share.

At this rate, I might start supporting Yorkshire.

  8. Marvellous innings from Rilee Rosseow, with a superb 3 off 5 balls to top score in Sydney Thunder’s truly magnificent 15 all out today.

    1. My mistake, Ben Doggett edged one past his own stumps first ball for a 4 coming in at 10. Apparently he got a standing ovation. Then holed out next ball.

        1. Alex Hales opened, missed the first ball of the innings, ran one off a wide second ball and by the time he faced his third ball, his side were already 7/3.

          He immediately edged behind.

Rashid Khan didn’t even get to bowl.

  9. I don’t often listen when England are fielding, except if I’m supporting the opposition (Pakistan? I’m neutral) … but I make an exception for young Rehan. Well played, sir.

        1. It’s worth watching for Root’s reaction to the Rizwan wicket alone.

Btw., I thought of you the other day, when I was browsing through Rob Keogh’s instagram for reasons I’ve forgotten, and there was a picture of him playing golf on the beach half naked, in all his muscular glory.

  11. Morning from Downunder on a absolutely superb Chrissie morn, blue skies and nice mild-ish 27c.
Hope your day when it gets there is a good one. Mrs AiX sends her best wishes as well.
My daughter is home for Xmas as is her beau, a young lad from Hackney from Nigerian roots. He’s a producer and some technical term I can’t remember for SKY TV. And he knows nowt about cricket, didn’t even know what or where Lords is. That’ll all change tomorrow when he gets to sit with me and watch the Boxing Day Test between us and the Saffers. My daughter says he’ll last a couple of overs at best.

*Chatting to him has been and is interesting. At his school there was little sport and no cricket and I gather from the way he described things that there was little point in trying out for a lot of sports because of his colour so he’s concentrated on his studies and is now doing a post grad course in creative writing concentrating on scriptwriting. Bought up by his aunt after his parents abandoned him as a baby he’s done really well for himself.
Racism has come up a few times and I’ve told him that we’re no better here than in the UK in regards to our treatment of our indigenous population and also the recent arrivals from Africa.

But for all that he’s a nice lad and I hope he’ll enjoy watching the West Indies&SA in the shorter forms of the game which begin after the Boxing Day Test.

Well it’s time to start the preparations for Xmas lunch. Again have a great day everyone as will we. -_-
